Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Listed below are some of the questions that people commonly ask us. If your question isn't answered here, please feel free to contact us.

How much does your service cost?
Prices will vary based on the number of devices that will need to be configured and the level of security desired. For a list of our base prices, check out our Services page. If you would like to receive a quote specific to your needs, simply fill out our Request a Quote form.
Why is wireless security important?
By adding a wireless router or access point to your network, you enable devices to connect to your network without being physically connected to a network cable. While this is very convenient for sharing a broadband connection in your home or office, access to your network is not automatically limited to people you know and trust. Unless you add security measures to your device, anyone with a wireless device will be able to access your network, use your Internet connection, look at files on your computer and possibly even upload a virus onto your computer. You wouldn't go on vacation and leave your front door standing wide open. So why would you risk leaving your network's "front door" wide open?
Can I secure my wireless network myself, without a Wi-Fi Firefly technician?
Yes, just like you can change the oil in your car without a mechanic. The techniques that are used to secure a wireless network are not proprietary to Wi-Fi Firefly. However, just like changing your oil, the steps to secure your network can be a little tricky. You must make sure you do them in the proper order or else you could lock everyone out of your network, including yourself. Wouldn't you rather enjoy the convenience and piece of mind that comes from having a qualified professional handle the messy details of securing your wireless network for you?
The installation guide that came with my wireless router showed me how secure my router by turning on WEP encryption. Isn't that all I need to do?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. WEP is a simple form of encryption that is supported by nearly every wireless router and access point made today, but it is just that - simple. Using tools that are freely available on the Internet, a hacker can analyze the encrypted data being transmitted on your wireless network, and then decrypt a WEP key in under 3 seconds!
Why don't the manufacturers of wireless networking equipment sell their products pre-configured to be secure?
Many of the techniques used to secure a wireless network can be tricky to implement, and the manufacturers don't want their equipment to be difficult to install. Difficult installations cause people to call the technical support lines which have to be staffed with qualified people, and that costs them money. Also, if the consumer makes a mistake during the installation, the product might become unusable, prompting them to return the product to the store where they bought it. This can cause both the consumer and the store staff to believe that a particular product model or manufacturer are defective, which hurts sales. Finally, some techniques require settings that are specific to the actual network on which the wireless device will be used. Obviously these cannot be setup until the device is in place.
How many wireless devices can access a wireless network?
Most wireless routers and access points have the ability to handle about 250 devices. As you add more devices, the performance will begin to drop. In a home setting, this is not an issue because you probably won't have even close to that number of devices on your network. However, in an office, it is very easy to reach the capacity of a single wireless router in a short amount of time. If this is the case, you will need to have multiple routers or access points available and possibly configure your devices to use a specific router.
Can Wi-Fi Firefly install a wireless network at my home/office/warehouse/etc?
Yes. Wi-Fi Firefly technicians will come to your home, office or where ever you need the wireless network to be installed.
Do I need to purchase the wireless networking equipment myself?
No. Wi-Fi Firefly can purchase any and all of the equipment that is needed and then include the cost on your invoice.
Does Wi-Fi Firefly only handles wireless security? Can Wi-Fi Firefly install my entire network (servers, routers, switches, cabling, etc.)?
While Wi-Fi Firefly specializes in wireless network security, we can handle other networking tasks as well. We'd be happy to discuss your specific needs and put together a team of qualified technicians that can get the job done. Please contact us for a quote.
